Climb Kilimanjaro via Marangu Route

Tour Overview

The Marangu Route, often nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route”, is the oldest and one of the most popular trails up Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its relative comfort compared to other routes, Marangu is the only trail that offers hut accommodations instead of tents, providing trekkers with simple beds, shared dining halls, and a more communal climbing experience. Its well-defined path and moderate gradient make it a preferred choice for first-time climbers or those looking for a less rugged trek.

This route takes climbers through a stunning variety of landscapes, from the lush rainforest teeming with wildlife to the moorland, alpine desert, and finally the icy summit of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. Along the way, trekkers enjoy sweeping views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, making the journey not only achievable but also breathtakingly scenic. The steady ascent allows climbers to gradually adapt to the altitude, though the shorter duration compared to other routes can still pose a challenge.

The Marangu Route is typically completed in five to six days, with the six-day option providing an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, increasing the chances of reaching the summit successfully. It is ideal for those seeking a balance between adventure and comfort, offering both accessibility and a true sense of accomplishment. Whether you are a beginner or simply looking for a well-supported trek, Marangu remains a classic and rewarding way to experience Africa’s highest mountain.

Day by Day

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi/Arusha
KIA
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Here, you will have time to relax, recover from your journey, and meet your mountain guide for a detailed briefing about the climb ahead. Equipment will be checked and any last-minute gear can be rented if necessary. Dinner and overnight are spent at the hotel, providing a comfortable start before the adventure begins.
After breakfast, you will be driven to Marangu Gate at 1,870 meters, the starting point of your trek. Registration and introductions with the crew are followed by the first section of the climb, which takes you through lush rainforest filled with monkeys, birds, and tropical vegetation. The walk is gradual but steady, ending at Mandara Hut at 2,720 meters. Here, you enjoy your first night in mountain huts, sharing stories with fellow trekkers and adjusting to the higher altitude.
The trail continues from the rainforest into the moorland and heath zone, where the scenery becomes more open and rugged. The peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo can often be seen rising dramatically against the sky. This is a rewarding day of trekking, lasting around five to six hours, before reaching Horombo Hut at 3,720 meters. The huts here are larger, with stunning views that stretch across the mountain slopes, making it a perfect spot to rest and prepare for the climb ahead.
On this day, the trek leads into the alpine desert zone. Vegetation becomes sparse, and the trail passes through a dry, lunar-like landscape. Climbers cross the “Last Water Point” before heading towards Kibo Hut at 4,703 meters, which sits at the base of the summit path. The walk takes six to seven hours and is steady but demanding due to the increasing altitude. Dinner is served early, followed by rest, as you prepare for the summit push that begins in the early hours of the next morning.
Summit day begins just after midnight, as climbers start the steep ascent under the stars. The climb to Gilman’s Point at 5,681 meters is tough, but determination carries you forward. From there, the trail continues along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa. Standing at the summit at sunrise is a truly unforgettable experience. After celebrating, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for the night.
The final descent takes you through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. At the gate, climbers receive their official summit certificates to mark their accomplishment. From here, a vehicle transfers you back to Moshi or Arusha, where you can enjoy a hot shower, a hearty meal, and a relaxing evening at your hotel.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight. Depending on your travel plans, you may also choose to extend your adventure with a safari in Tanzania’s famous national parks or a relaxing beach holiday in Zanzibar.
